File Uploads

Upload PDF documents to add context to your conversations

What are File Uploads?

File uploads let you add PDF documents as context for your ModelMonkey conversations. When you upload a file, ModelMonkey processes and indexes its contents, making the information available for your questions and tasks.

This is useful when you need to work with data or information that exists outside your spreadsheet - contracts, reports, specifications, invoices, or any other PDF documents.

Tip

Uploaded documents are session-specific. They persist for the duration of your conversation but are automatically cleaned up after a period of inactivity.

Uploading Documents

To upload a PDF document:

1. Click the Attachment Icon - In the message composer at the bottom of the sidebar, click the paperclip icon next to the send button.

2. Select Your File - Choose a PDF file from your device. Only PDF files are supported.

3. Wait for Processing - ModelMonkey extracts and indexes the document content. You'll see a progress indicator as the document is processed.

4. Ready to Use - Once processing completes, you'll see the document chip displaying the filename and page count. The document is now available for your conversation.

Warning

Processing time depends on document size and complexity. Large documents or scanned PDFs may take longer to process.

Supported Formats and Limits

Supported File Types
Currently, only PDF files are supported. This includes both text-based PDFs and scanned documents - ModelMonkey uses OCR to extract text from scanned pages automatically.

File Size Limit
Maximum file size is 50MB per document. Larger files will be rejected with an error message.

Page Limit
PDFs can have up to 100 pages. Documents exceeding this limit will not be processed.

Documents Per Session
You can upload up to 10 documents per conversation session. If you reach this limit, you'll need to remove existing documents before adding new ones.

Document Retention
Uploaded documents are retained for approximately 1 hour after your last interaction. After this period, they are automatically cleaned up from the system.

Using Document Context

Once a document is uploaded, ModelMonkey can access its contents to help with your tasks:

Asking Questions
Ask questions about the document's content. ModelMonkey finds the most relevant sections and provides accurate answers.

Extracting Data
Request specific data from the document to be extracted into your spreadsheet. This works well for invoices, reports, and structured documents.

Summarizing Content
Ask for summaries or key points from the document. This is useful for quickly understanding long reports or contracts.

Cross-Referencing
Combine document information with your spreadsheet data. For example, compare figures in a report against your existing data.

text
Example prompts:
- "What are the key terms in this contract?"
- "Extract the line items from this invoice into my sheet"
- "Summarize the main findings from this report"
- "Compare the Q3 figures in the PDF to my spreadsheet"

Common ways to use uploaded documents

Managing Documents

Viewing Uploaded Documents
Your uploaded documents appear as chips above the message composer. Each chip shows:

  • The filename
  • Page count
  • Status (processing, ready, or error)

Removing Documents
Click the X button on any document chip to remove it from your session. This frees up a slot if you've reached the 10-document limit.

Canceling Uploads
If a document is still processing, you can cancel the upload by clicking the X button. This stops the processing and discards any partial work.

Error Handling
If an upload fails, you'll see an error message explaining what went wrong. Common errors include:

  • File too large (exceeds 50MB)
  • Too many pages (exceeds 100 pages)
  • Invalid file type (not a PDF)
  • Session limit exceeded (already have 10 documents)

Best Practices

Upload Before Asking
Upload your document before asking questions about it. ModelMonkey needs time to process the file before it can answer questions.

Be Specific in Questions
Reference specific sections, pages, or topics when asking about document content. This helps ModelMonkey locate the most relevant information.

Combine with Spreadsheet Context
Use uploaded documents alongside your spreadsheet data for comprehensive analysis. For example, upload a report and ask ModelMonkey to compare its figures against your existing data.

Remove Unused Documents
If you're done with a document, remove it to keep your session organized and free up slots for other uploads.

Common Use Cases

Invoice Processing
Upload invoices and extract line items, totals, and vendor information directly into your spreadsheet.

Report Analysis
Upload financial reports, sales summaries, or analytics reports to ask questions and extract key metrics.

Contract Review
Upload contracts to identify key terms, dates, and obligations without reading through the entire document.

Data Entry from Forms
Upload completed forms or applications to extract structured data into spreadsheet rows.

Research Compilation
Upload research documents and extract relevant data points into a structured analysis spreadsheet.
